Important Therapy for a Serious Complication

Hypercalcemia is the most common, serious metabolic disorder in patients with cancer. 4-7
  • Hypercalcemia occurs in as many as 10% to 20% of cancer patients. 1

  • Certain malignancies, including non-small cell lung cancer, breast cancer, multiple myeloma, and squamous cell cancers, are associated with a higher incidence of hypercalcemia. 1-3

  • Cancer-related hypercalcemia can often go undiagnosed, as many patients may exhibit vague and nonspecific signs and symptoms or signs and symptoms can be alternatively attributed to anti-cancer treatment, brain metastases, or progressive disease. 6, 8

  • In one recent prospective study of hospitalized cancer patients with hypercalcemia attributable to their malignancy, 63% of patients received no specific therapy for cancer-related hypercalcemia, and 75% were not adequately rehydrated. 8

  • Because effective treatment can normalize serum calcium concentrations, with substantial improvement of symptoms and quality of life, patients at high risk of cancer-related hypercalcemia should be closely monitored to allow early detection and prompt, appropriate intervention. 7-9
